Want Your Business to Grow? Be Careful What You Wish For

Strategy is what I specialise in. It comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes and is different for every single client. But ultimately, they all want the same thing – they want their businesses to be bigger and better than ever before.

The bigger the better as far as I’m concerned – I’m all about thinking on a grand scale and reaching for the stars. If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well and if you don’t want to reach those lofty heights, then what we do is not for you.

There is a warning that comes with this though, and I always deliver it right at the outset.

“Be Careful What You Wish For”

It’s about the one and only time my message stays the same; that what I tell one I tell them all, without exception, because it’s important they know what they’re letting themselves in for.

I’ll give you an example. I’ve been working with someone for about 9 months now and my client is starting to reap the rewards. New Clients are coming in thick and fast, the workload is growing by the day. So is the admin. So is the pressure. But, as yet, the big influx of cash hasn’t arrived. It will do, in the next three months or so, but for now, there’s loads of work for no immediate reward.

Imagine my surprise at the latest strategy meeting yesterday then, when the client said she wasn’t happy with the way things were going. I asked her what the problem was and she said it was too hard, she was working longer hours than ever before and was struggling to keep up. I reminded her that we’d talked about this before and I’d warned her that this would happen and she said “Yes, I know, but this isn’t what I thought it would be”

Because even though I’d warned her months ago that this is what would happen, some people think they can have what they want without putting in the effort, but unfortunately, it’s a case of “No Pain, No Gain”

You see, growing your business if tough. REALLY tough. It takes hard work and commitment and dedication to get you where you want to be. However, put the effort in and the results can be astonishing. I believe that everyone can have what they wish for in business, it’s just a case of wanting it badly enough.

The problems usually start when the business takes off. Basically if clients thought it was hard work while they were on the journey, I need to let them know that it doesn’t let up when they arrive. The bigger the business, the more effort it can take to keep it going.

Obviously, once a business reaches a certain size, there’s usually the opportunity to bring other people in the share the workload, but when you first hit the big time, the money’s often all gone and there’s a period when you still have to do everything yourself to make sure that you stay up there for long enough to get the cash flow to pay those people to help you out.

So before you start on the journey, think carefully about what you might find when you reach your destination and be prepared to work harder than ever before. You might have to miss out on that night down the pub with your friends. You probably won’t have time to go on holiday. You certainly won’t get much sleep.
